Albemarle School will implement the Parent Participation Program in the 2011 – 2012 school year. The Parent Participation Program is intended to address the tremendous shortfall between Albemarle School tuition and its actual operating costs.
The Parent Participation Program requires parents/family of every student, K – 12, attending Albemarle School to provide 60 hours of service to Albemarle School. This program will make a positive impact on a significant portion of the shortfall in a fair and equitable manner for all Albemarle School families. A list of sample service opportunities and a Parent Participation Program contract are attached.
The Parent Participation Program for the upcoming school year is July 1, 2011 – April 30, 2012. During this period, a family unable to provide their service hours will be required to pay $10 per hour for every hour not served. Families may decide to pay for any or all 60 service hours in advance and prorate the cost and payments over the entire period. In all cases service hours must be completed or paid for on or before April 30, 2012. Report cards will not be issued for students whose families have not served and/or paid for all 60 hours.
A record keeping form for service hours performed will be provided upon return of the signed Parent Participation Contract.
Why a Parent Participation Program? Costs for goods and services continue to rise significantly with no end in sight. Albemarle School tuition for the 2010 – 2011 school year is $4000 - $4300 per student. Actual per student operating costs for Albemarle School for the same period is $6370. The result is an operating shortfall of $2070 per student. We expect the cost to operate Albemarle School in the 2011 – 2012 school year will increase by at least five percent (5%) or $318. In the upcoming school year the cost to operate Albemarle
School is expected to be at least $6688 per student. Tuition for the same period was increased $200, resulting in an operating shortfall of $2188 per student. Albemarle School cannot continue to operate with such a difference between tuition and operating costs.
Typically fundraising is used to fund various extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, field trips, scholarships, and the like. In recent years fundraising activities have been conducted throughout the school year to almost exclusively offset the operating costs shortfall. Only a very small group of devoted parents and the
dedicated staff and faculty serve the entire Albemarle School family by planning, preparing, and conducting these activities. It is critical that Albemarle School reverse this trend. All Albemarle School families should be involved in fundraising and those funds raised should not be necessary to fund operating costs.
The Parent Participation Program is a “fair share” program that with different names and in various forms is practiced in many private schools around the country, to include some in our region. We look forward to serving with you in the 2011 – 2012 School Year.
Sincerely,
Signed Paul Thompson
