Upper School
Realizing each student’s full potential is the mission of Albemarle School’s High School. Through exposure to intellectual, social, and civic challenges, Albemarle builds the high school student’s knowledge base and critical thinking skills, while providing positive outlets for personal growth.
Academics are the cornerstone of Albemarle’s program. At Albemarle School students normally accumulate between 22 and 24 units of credit, with at least two levels of one Foreign Language. Course offerings include Spanish I, II and III, Latin I and II, English I - IV, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Advanced Math, Pre-Calculus, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Science, Government/Economics, U.S. History, World Cultures, Western Civilization, Contemporary Issues, and Health/Physical Education. Academic and civic clubs such as Beta and Student Government Association promote leadership and service tendencies. Healthy competition is fostered through an athletic program. Upper School students supervise publication of the yearbook and take active leadership roles in all areas of school life.
Guidance and Counseling at Albemarle School promote an open-door policy of faculty-student communication. Teachers and administrators are always available to listen. Rapport among staff, students, and parents in a supportive family atmosphere is a hallmark of Albemarle’s counseling approach. Students are encouraged to contribute to the community at large through civic volunteering and service learning. Juniors and seniors are required to complete a certain number of hours spent shadowing a professional in one of their own career interest areas.
Individual behavior is a vital aspect of school life, based on a sense of personal responsibility and on respect for others. A students’ willingness to conduct themselves with a spirit of cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others, coupled with strong effort, is of primary importance at Albemarle School. All students are required to adhere to the honor code which states, "On my honor, I will not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do." At all times students are expected to exhibit honesty, integrity, and good character. We believe it is a privilege to attend this school and personal growth as well as academic achievement is a major goal for all students.
