Middle School

     Facilitating the transition from the elementary experience to the more rigorous high school program is the goal of Albemarle School’s Middle School. Students use assignment logs and study skill exercises as they maximize their academic self-discipline. Communication is the key, with advisors giving up-to-date information on school activities. Through the homework log, a regular program of communication with parents concerning each student’s class, progress is enhanced. The academic year is divided into four marking periods with a regular progress report sent home to parents in the middle of each grading period.

     Academics offer expanded opportunities for Albemarle School’s middle school students. A "hands on" science program builds on the student’s natural curiosity as they investigate the physical world through experiments. A strong pre-algebra program helps students prepare for higher math. Through the classics based literature program and emphasis on the writing process, language arts skills are developed. World studies of Africa and Asia and North Carolina History comprise a social studies curriculum, which challenges a student’s understanding and creativity.

     The core area of communication, mathematics, social studies, and science are enhanced by an activity based enrichment program. Students participate in laboratory experiences in the high school lab, have classes in Spanish, learn creative and research writing processes, and have the opportunity for individual reading and computer instruction and practice.

     Student Life helps middle school students grow in other ways. A wide variety of extra curricular activities, participation in the athletic program, and many planned opportunities for social interaction keep the middle school students very busy.
